When Do Americans Need Square Foot to Square Meter Conversion?

US real estate, flooring, and construction are quoted in square feet, but international products, European building plans, and many engineering specs use square meters. Renovating a kitchen with imported materials, comparing a US home listing to an overseas floor plan, or buying laminate from a metric supplier all require an exact area conversion.

Unlike a simple length conversion, area multiplies both dimensions, so the factor is the length factor squared: 1 ft = 0.3048 m exactly, therefore 1 sq ft = 0.3048 × 0.3048 = 0.09290304 m².

The Exact Conversion Formula

To convert square feet to square meters, multiply by 0.09290304.

m² = sq ft × 0.09290304

Flooring: a 12 ft × 15 ft room is 180 sq ft = 16.72 m². When buying laminate sold in square meters, order about 10% extra for cutting waste.

Paint: one US gallon covers roughly 350 sq ft of wall area, which is 32.52 m² per gallon. If your wall area is quoted in square meters, divide by 32.52 to estimate gallons.

Tile: a backsplash of 30 sq ft is 2.79 m². Many metric tile boxes state coverage in square meters, so convert before ordering to avoid shortfalls.

Common Mistakes When Converting Area

The biggest error is converting length and then forgetting to square the factor. Multiplying the room length in feet by 0.3048 and the width by 0.3048 separately gives the same result as using 0.09290304 once — but using 0.3048 directly on square feet is wrong by a factor of 10.76.

Another common mistake is mixing US survey feet with international feet in older deeds and land records. Modern practice uses the international foot (0.3048 m exactly), which is what this site and NIST use. Survey feet differ by about 2 parts per million.
