Divisors are commercial rules set by carriers, not physical constants, and they change with rate updates — always confirm the current divisor on the carrier’s rate sheet before quoting a customer.

How to use the result

1. Measure the parcel’s outside dimensions (L × W × H), including any protrusions and packaging.

2. Multiply them and divide by the carrier’s divisor to get dimensional weight.

3. Compare dimensional weight with the scale weight — bill the higher one (chargeable weight).

4. If dimensional weight dominates, compress or use a smaller carton to lower the billed weight.

Decision guide — which carrier divisor to trust

Domestic UPS or FedEx? Use ÷139 for every package, no minimum — and remember ceiling rounding since Aug 2025.

USPS? ÷139 applies only above 1,728 in³ (1 cu ft). Below that, Ground Advantage bills actual weight — a smaller box can drop you out of DIM entirely.

International DHL Express? ÷139 (in/lb) or ÷5,000 (cm/kg) depending on how you measured.

Amazon FBA? ÷139 within FBA’s size tiers (updated Jan 15, 2026) — check the tier before you pack.

Always re-confirm the divisor on the carrier’s current rate sheet before you quote a customer.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is dimensional (volumetric) weight?

Carriers price light-but-bulky shipments by volume, not just scale weight. Dimensional weight = (length × width × height) ÷ a divisor set by the carrier. You are billed for the greater of the actual scale weight and the dimensional weight — that greater value is the "chargeable weight".

What DIM divisor do UPS, FedEx, USPS, DHL, and FBA use in 2026?

UPS and FedEx use ÷139 for domestic (all packages). USPS Priority Mail, Priority Mail Express, and Ground Advantage moved to ÷139 on July 12, 2026 (was 166 for Priority; Ground Advantage previously had no DIM below 1,728 in³). DHL Express uses ÷139 for in/lb or ÷5,000 for cm/kg. Amazon FBA uses ÷139 with size tiers updated January 15, 2026. Always confirm on the carrier’s current rate sheet.

Why is my chargeable weight higher than the scale weight?

A large, light parcel occupies cabin/container volume that could carry denser freight. When dimensional weight exceeds actual weight, the carrier bills the dimensional figure so it is compensated for the space used. This is normal for pillows, apparel, and inflated packaging.

How can I reduce DIM weight and shipping cost?

Use the smallest box that safely fits the item, remove void fill (air pillows, foam peanuts), compress or flat-pack products, and avoid oversized packaging. Every extra inch of box size adds billable weight at the ÷139 divisor — often enough to drop a weight tier.

Can I print this for a quote or packing list?

Yes. The "Print packing list" button generates a clean A4/Letter page showing your package dimensions, actual weight, and the DIM/chargeable weight for each carrier — useful for quoting, handing off to a colleague, or keeping with a shipment.
